1.      INTRODUCTION

Thank you for your interest in Rick's Lighthouse Screensavers™. This program is a high quality 32 bit application.  Automatic setup/uninstall is provided for ease of use.  The program provides a slideshow-style screensaver that cycles through original photographs of American lighthouses taken by the author.

The program is powered by a top-notch screensaver engine that lets you set the picture duration, show pictures at original size or full-screen, view or hide captions, and use up to 23 transition effects.  Other features include Microsoft Plus! support and a system tray-based screensaver control utility.

 2.      SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

·        Windows 95, 98, ME, XP, 2000, or Windows NT 4.0 (or greater),

·        Video display set at high color (16 bit) or true color (32 bit),

·        Approximately 3-7 MB of free disk space (depending on the Volume).

Note: This product is a 32-bit Windows application and will not work with Windows 3.1 or Macintosh operating systems.  It is best viewed at a screen resolution of 800 X 600 and/or 1024x768 screen resolutions.

3.      INSTALLATION

DOWNLOAD: The downloaded file is a self-extracting file.    Double clicking on this file will cause it to expand into a new folder that contains separate files. [Double click on the file and a window opens, click on the "Unzip" button. After the expansion is complete click on the "Close" button.] The new folder is created in the same directory as the downloaded file. Within the newly created folder is a file called “Setup”. To install the program double click on the "Setup" file and follow the onscreen prompts.

[CD: For CD purchasers insert the CD into the CD ROM drive.  If auto-notification is turned on then the CD will automatically launch and an installation dialog window will appear - click on the appropriate install button.  If auto-notification is not turned on, double click on “My Computer” and then the CD ROM drive to open the CD. Double click on the Setup file.

After the Setup program has completed installing all the files, you will be asked if you want the screensaver to be set as the current (or default) screensaver.  You should want to do this, and the box indicating so should be checked.

Finally, the Display Properties window will appear with the screensaver tab selected. By clicking on the "Settings..." button next to the screensaver name you can open the Screensaver Settings Window where you can customize the operation of your new screensaver as described in Section 4 below. The Screensaver Settings Window is also used when registering/unlocking the screensaver.

The screensaver installs in a trial mode (including CD versions).  Entering a Customer ID (also referred to as Your Registration Name in some versions) and an Unlock Code (also referred to as Your Registration Key in some versions) will change the screensaver over to a registered, full feature, mode.

The installation application will also install a Quick Start Shortcut on the desktop and a Screensaver Control in the System Tray.  These are discussed in detail in section 4 below.

Note: If the tray-based Screensaver Control has previously been installed in the system tray, the computer might have to be restarted before the newly installed Screensaver Control will work properly.

4.      CUSTOMIZING YOUR SCREENSAVER

You can easily change the appearance of your screensaver for things such as:

·        Time delay between image changes

·        Transition effects

·        Image size

·        Turning Captions on/off

·        Use of Microsoft Plus! Features

 Here's how...

First, you need to open the Display Properties Window.

You can do this either one of two ways:

a) Go to the START menu and select SETTINGS then CONTROL PANELS.  When the Control Panel window opens, double click on DISPLAY.  The Display Properties Window opens. Click on the "Screensaver" tab. See figure below.  OR

Close any windows that are covering the desktop and right click anywhere on the desktop and select properties from the pop up menu. The Display Properties Window will open. Click on the "Screensaver" tab. See figure below.

With the Display Properties Window open and the Screensaver tab selected, click on the "Settings..." button next to the screensaver name. This will bring up the Screensaver Settings Window that you can use to change the screensaver settings. The setting controls are located under the "General" and "Transitions" tabs. See figure below.

Make any changes you want, and click the "OK" button. Feel free to experiment with the settings to get the effect(s) you like best...you can always go back and change them again.

Note: Picture captions may be turned off by selecting  "(none)" in the Caption Location drop down menu. Captions may be repositioned on the screen by selecting any other location shown in the drop down menu.

5.      USING THE QUICK START ICON

As part of the installation a Quick Start Icon is placed on your Desktop.  By double-clicking on the Screen Saver QuickStart icon on your desktop you can instantly start whichever screensaver you have chosen as the default. If you don't plan on using this shortcut then it may be moved to the Recycle Bin without affecting the operation of the screensaver.

6.      USING THE TOOL TRAY ICON

This is a wonderful tool that will allow you to control many of your installed screensavers. Double-Left-Click on the tool tray icon to start the default screensaver. [Note might also appear with a white crescent moon instead of yellow.]

A Single-Right-Click will open a menu that will provide multiple choices as follows:

"Set default screen saver": Here you can choose which screensaver you wish to set as the default.

"Configure screen saver": You can choose to configure any of your screensavers by selecting it in the submenu. The configuration window will open and you can configure the lighthouse screensaver as described above in section 3.  Note: Other screensavers may have different configuration window options.

"Preview screen saver":  You can select any of the installed screensavers to preview.  This will not change the default screensaver. Moving the mouse or hitting a keyboard key will stop the screensaver.

"Launch "....." screen saver": Selecting this will start the default screensaver listed.

"Disable screen saver":  This will turn off the screen saver. A small red "x" will appear on the screen saver control in the system tray to remind you that the screensaver is turned off. The "Disable screen saver" menu item is grayed out and an "Enable screen saver" menu item is enabled.  Select this later menu item will turn the screensaver feature back on.

"Disable screen saver for XX min or hours": You can override the delay time by selecting this option or you can disable the screensaver feature entirely by selecting "Disable screen saver" from the menu. As long as this is selected a red "x" will appear on the Screen Saver Control in the system tray. To re-enable the screensaver select "Enable screen saver" from the menu.

"Unload":  This selection will remove the Screen Saver Control icon from the System Tray. If you choose to unload the icon and want it back in the tool tray, just go to the "Start" menu then select "Programs" then select "Start-up" and then click on "Screen Saver Control".

"Change Screen Saver at Startup": When this is highlighted, every time the computer starts a different screensaver will be selected and set as the default screensaver.  This is a good way to automatically rotate between installed screensaver.  [Note: screensavers are .scr files that are in the Windows/System32 folder on Windows XP computers. Moving these files out of the System32 folder will remove them from the screensaver list.]

7.      REGISTRATION

This screensaver is SHAREWARE. It will operate in a trial mode for 3-7 days (depending on the screensaver), then it will expire.  To continue to use the screensaver you will need to register it.   [CD purchasers receive registration information with the CD and should proceed to Section 8.]

When you register, you will receive a Customer ID  and a Unlock Code . Sometimes the Customer ID  is referred to as either the License Name or the Registration Name. Sometimes the Unlock Code might be referred to as the License Code or the Registration Key.) By typing these into the appropriate boxes on the screensaver settings window, the trial version will unlock.  Unlocking means that the registration (“nag”) screens will no longer appear, the screensaver limitations will be removed.

Note: If the screensaver is time limited, it can still be unlocked even after it has expired simply by going to the screensaver settings window and typing in the registration information. There is no need to re-install an expired screensaver to register.

8.      UNLOCKING THE TRIAL VERSION:

[Note: If your screensaver expires before you receive your registration information don't worry, you can still register it after receiving your registration information by following the instructions below.]

Open the Display Properties Window.  One way to do this is to right-click your mouse on the desktop and a drop down menu will appear. Select 'Properties'. The Display Properties Window will appear.

Click the 'Settings' button next to the screensaver name. The Screensaver Settings Window will appear (see figure below).  The first tab is labeled 'Trial' (or “Try & Buy”). It contains two boxes that need to be filled in. One is for the registration name the other is for the registration key. In some screensavers the Registration Name is referred to as Customer ID or License Name and the Registration Key is referred to as Unlock Code or License Code.

SCREENSAVER SETTINGS WINDOW - TRIAL TAB

Type in Your Registration Name and Your Registration Key EXACTLY as it appears on the registration letter or email. The easiest way to do this is to cut and paste directly from the registration email.

Note: Sometimes, depending on how the names were typed into the on-line registration form, the automatic name/key generation software places two spaces between the first and last names in the Registration Name.  If you are having problems unlocking, you should check to see if this is the case.

Click on OK.  The settings box will disappear.

Click on the 'Settings' button again and check that the Trial tab (or Try & Buy) has disappeared.  If it is still there, the screensaver has not accepted your registration information.  Please try again, being careful to enter them EXACTLY as in your registration email and also make sure that the correct screensaver is selected.

Keep the registration information provided to you. You will need it if you ever have to re-install the screensaver in the future.

10.      TROUBLESHOOTING / QUESTIONS

a. Problem finding the screensaver settings window: Right click on the desktop and select Properties. The "Display Properties Window" opens. Click on the Screen saver tab. Click on the "Settings…" button next to the screensaver name. The "Screen Saver Settings Window" opens.

b. You enter the registration name and key but the screensaver doesn't unlock:

1. Check that you are trying to register the same screensaver that you purchased the registration for.

2. Make sure the capitalization entered is exactly as shown in the registration letter.

3. Sometimes the automatic name/key generation software places two spaces between the first and last names in the Registration Name.  Try typing two spaces between the first and last names in your registration name.

c. The screensaver starts but the screen is black and only the captions are displayed: Black screens usually result when some other program is running in the background at the time the screensaver runs and there is not enough memory for both to run simultaneously.  Examples might be automatic back-up programs or virus checking programs that run when the computer has been sitting idle, etc.  Check to see if turning off these other programs helps.

d. Changing the default screensaver.  There are two ways, the standard Windows way, and by using the Screensaver Control that was installed with the screensaver (There is no need to uninstall a screensaver to change to a new default):

1.   The standard windows way: Go to the Display properties screen (right click on the desktop and select ‘Properties’ from the drop down menu). Click on the screensaver tab.  A name box appears on the in the middle of the window.  Clicking on the down arrow to the right of the name results in the display of a list of available screensavers.  Select the one you want to have as the new default.

2.   Using the Screensaver Control: Right click on the Screensaver Control in the System Tray (see section 5 above) and select ‘Set Default Screensaver’ from the list.  A new drop down list appears where you can select another screensaver as default.

e. Unlocking an expired screensaver.  There is no need to re-install an expired screensaver to register/unlock it.  Simply follow the instructions in Section 8 above.
